After San Francisco initially banned Lime, Spin and Bird—electric scooter-sharing startups—the city developed a permitting program for them. Lime, Spin, and Scoot (owned by Bird) were all granted permits and allowed back onto city streets in 2019, alongside newcomer JUMP. Also that year, Postmates worked with San Francisco to receive the first permit to test its autonomous delivery robot, overturning a blanket 2017 ban on the devices.
